Description

As singers often do, The Dismemberment Plan’s Travis Morrison recently articulated something that we’ve known but hadn’t heard said in this way: “I have a growing conviction that people don’t recognize how much late Millennials through Gen Xers are doing destination rock ’n’ roll travel to fairly routine shows,” the indie rocker told us. There it is. (The full Q&A is on page 93. You should check it out.)

There’s even a slightly different version of that line in an early pitch presentation for this magazine. The idea being, as the number of festivals of all kinds has grown over the past 30 years, and as the consumption and sharing of experiential value has become increasingly important to every generation since Gen X, mega live events have emerged as a main reason (or excuse) to travel the country. And Fifty Grande is here to guide you to the most notable ones.

Which is why, in our first Fall Travel issue we dedicated such a huge piece of the magazine to upcoming music, food, drinks and adventure festivals. If you’ve been to our website, you know we cover these events day to day in our festivals section, and this preview is a curated version of what you’ll find there in the coming months. We’ve included 30 happening between now and December, including the inaugural Best Friends Festival in Las Vegas in October, which features Morrison’s The Plan as a headliner. These events span 19 states and 27 cities, big and small, urban and otherwise.

There’s lots more, too. Beyond the festival preview, we’ve brought you places, new trends and reasons to check out the West, Midwest and South before the end of the year. I hope you enjoy.
