Mojave Resort

THE SHORT VERSION

What’s old is new again at this 25-room boutique with a decidedly 2020s makeover.

Scene

Located two blocks from Palm Desert’s El Paseo shopping district, Mojave Resort is a just-opened 25-room boutique hotel that leans into its history as a former mid-century desert motel, called Gala Villa. What’s old is new again — you’ve seen this before — this time with a decidedly 2020s makeover: The orange, brown, green, sand and cream color palette mixed with a design that does its best to pull in the outside, a retro characteristic that was preserved, help set the laid-back vibes. (If you want to see what the original Gala Villa looked like, see here). Even if you only saw the Mojave’s lobby, you’d know everything you need to know — small and simple, yet thoughtful and considered, the lobby’s tone is anchored by the exhibition-size Joshua Tree piece (Beau Simmons’ “Desert Glow”) that tees up the front desk which doubles as a two-seater bar, where guests get a comped drink upon arrival.

Location

Palm Desert is located in California’s Coachella Valley, about 14 miles southeast of Palm Springs and basically between Palm Springs and Coachella. It’s known for chill vibe, with country clubs, golf courses and shopping options. El Paseo is the shopping district at the city’s center and home to boutiques, galleries and restaurants. The Gardens on El Paseo, Coda Gallery, Saks Fifth Avenue Palm Desert and the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens are all within a short distance of the hotel.
