Best Things to Do in Huntington Beach, Calif.

BY Lauren Harvey | May 18, 2023

Welcome to Fifty Grande’s Best of the U.S. Bucket List series. This is your one-stop travel guide to the best, most unique and quintessential experiences of a place. Curated by experts, vetted by in-the-know locals, this is all you need to have the best trip ever. If we’ve written a Bucket List, we recommend you go. If it’s on this list, it’s the best the city has to offer right now. Consider this your one-stop answer to “What are the best things to do in Huntington Beach?”

Much to the chagrin of Santa Cruz, Huntington Beach is the official “Surf City USA.” Throughout the 20th century, father of modern surfing Duke Kahanamoku rode the waves next to the beach’s iconic pier. Today, it remains the location of the annual US Open of Surfing: the largest action sports festival in the world.

Since its foundation in 1909, Huntington Beach has rebranded itself from a developing oil town to a popular travel destination. Over the summer, the beach has more bathing suit-clad bodies than sand, and sunburnt faces throng Main Street well into the night. While beachfront mall Pacific City glistens with chic restaurants and modern design, laid-back food fixtures like TK Burger and Sancho’s Tacos satiate the hungry beach-going crowd. But Huntington Beach still retains that local beach bum amiability, which you see in the Tuesday night fairs on Main Street and yoga sessions on the sand. Between the downtown quirks and excellent (though admittedly  chilly) waves, there’s something that keeps people coming back to Huntington Beach for more.

When you visit this Orange County town, here are the places and activities worth checking out.

You’re here for the beach

With 8.5 miles of beach and world-famous waves, Huntington Beach is best known for surfing. But even if you’re not interested in the sport, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the sand and shore.

Huntington Beach Pier

Huntington Beach Pier, Huntington Beach, CA, USA

The Huntington Beach Pier was first built out of wood in 1902 before the town was even incorporated as a city. Though it has been wrecked and rebuilt several times, today the concrete structure stretches 1,850 feet into the Pacific Ocean. The southside of the pier is a popular surf spot, frequented by pros and locals. Feel free to watch them as you stroll down the pier, and if you make it to the very end, stop for a bite to eat at the new Pacific Hideaway (RIP Ruby’s).

Besides being a great beginner surf spot, the beach is conveniently located next to the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, where you can observe wildlife such as rattlesnakes and endangered Ridgway’s rails. At night, Bolsa Chica State Beach transforms into a busy bonfire spot, where you can enjoy s’mores, hot dogs and good company on the sand and under the stars.

Dog Beach

Dog Beach | Huntington Beach, Goldenwest Street, Huntington Beach, CA, USA

Dogs of every size and breed rule the waves at Huntington Dog Beach. Unleashed, these four-legged friends roll in the sand, splash in the water and even make a few new friends. This isn’t a great place for surfing or swimming, but it’s a worthwhile spot to visit whether or not you actually own a dog. Dog Beach is also the location for the biannual Corgi Beach Day — open to actual corgis and “honorary” corgis alike.
