A Guide To “Succession” Filming Locations in NYC

BY Hilary Harty | June 24, 2023

You’re headed to New York City and want to know the “Succession” filming locations? You’re in the right place.

Regardless of how you feel about the top 1%, the white-knuckle dramedy “Succession” was a hit until the series finale on May 28, 2023. Even in this streaming age, HBO subscribers would tune in each Sunday at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time to watch the Roy kinder get mercilessly roasted by their tycoon father, Logan Roy (Brian Cox), a man who’d most likely flip the table if you bought Boardwalk and Park Place before him in Monopoly.

Throughout its four-season run, “Succession” navigated Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Connor (Alan Ruck) Roy’s complicated relationship with their parents, each other and Waystar Royco, the right-wing media imperium founded and helmed by their father. Family members repeatedly undermined and sabotaged one another in the pursuit of becoming the next CEO post-Logan Roy, a character largely inspired by Rupert Murdoch. Over the course of the series, “Succession” filmed in Iceland, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom and across the United States, but most of the Machiavellian insults take place in New York City. While the series might be over, here’s your guide to the “Succession” filming locations in NYC (and a bonus one in New York state) for you to explore this summer.

As always, our list contains spoilers about the trials and tribulations of the family, so proceed with caution

#1

American Irish Historical Society

991 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA

Many a contentious family symposium occurred at Logan Roy’s stately Fifth Avenue townhouse throughout the series, though all interior shots of the billionaire’s complex were shot on a soundstage at Silvercup Studios in Long Island City. Luckily, the lobby of the townhouse was filmed at the American Irish Historical Society on Manhattan’s Museum Mile, just across the street from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is the place where Logan Roy first met Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) when Logan’s ever-faithful security guard, Colin (Scott Nicholson), slams Greg against the wall — you know, for Logan’s protection. The antique elevator in the lobby of the American Irish Historical Society actually inspired the design of the elevator used for interior shots on set, and the style of Logan’s townhouse complements the lobby. Plans to rejuvenate the American Irish Historical Society were announced in December 2022 and the museum is slated to reopen later this year.

Church of St. Ignatius Loyola

Church of St. Ignatius Loyola

980 Park Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA

Abandon all hope, ye who enter: serious spoilers lie ahead. For those of you who are caught up on “Succession,” you’ll recognize the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola as the set of Logan Roy’s funeral in the ninth episode of season four. The historic church was established in 1851, though it opened in its current Park Avenue location back in 1900. This is where we see Roman, Shiv, Kendall and Logan’s estranged brother, Ewan Roy (James Cromwell), give their emotional speeches about the tycoon’s legacy. The church was listed as a New York City landmark in March 1969 and then later added to the National Register of Historic Places in July 1980. Several notable figures have had funerals here, including singer and actress Aaliyah, actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, designer Oscar de la Renta and former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

The GRILL

The GRILL

The GRILL

99 E 52nd St, New York, NY 10022, USA

Helmed by Major Food Group, The GRILL is a Midtown Manhattan institution and one of the best places to dine when you’re trying to channel Don Draper’s continental cuisine vibes. Expect to sip on martinis while dining on oysters, prime rib from the trolley, and pasta a la presse, a dish which uses a 19th-century duck press tableside in preparation of a meaty pasta dish — it’s as dramatic as it sounds. Couple this with opulent gold fixtures throughout the restaurant and you’ve set the scene for a very snazzy and unforgettable night. So unforgettable (and pricey), in fact, that it could be the only place flashy enough for Connor Roy and Willa Ferreyra’s (Justine Lupe) wedding rehearsal gone awry in the fourth season. Before you go, make a reservation, dress sharp and for the love of Waystar Royco, make sure the person who joins you is someone you want to spend the rest of your life with — or at the very least, the rest of the night.

Jean-Georges

1 Central Park West, New York, NY 10023, USA

Logan Roy and his spoiled progeny are often too busy plotting their takeover to visit restaurants, but in season four, episode seven, the siblings briefly meet at the two-Michelin-star Jean-Georges restaurant to discuss their father’s forthcoming funeral (and so Shiv can call Kendall “Waystar Jesus”). The haute cuisine restaurant is named after chef and owner Jean-Georges Vongerichten and is located in the lobby of the Trump International Hotel and Tower on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Jean-Georges has received multiple accolades, with the Michelin Guide rating it as one of the top five French restaurants in America. The restaurant offers a six-course omnivore or vegetarian prix fixe menu, but if you’ve nabbed a reservation, we recommend springing for the 10-course omnivore experience for a mere $368. Prepare for your senses to be dazzled as you dine on caviar, yellowfin tuna ribbons, foie gras, duck breast and much more. Dining here is a bona fide white-tablecloth experience.

Peter McManus Cafe

Peter McManus Cafe

152 7th Ave, New York, NY 10011, USA

After Willa abruptly leaves her rehearsal dinner at The GRILL, Connor sullenly asks his siblings to have a drink with him, only he doesn’t want to go to an upscale bar. Enter Peter McManus Cafe, an old-school pub best suited for non-billionaire plebs who want to enjoy a sudsy beer with friends after a long day of something called a job. The charming haunt opened in 1936 and has been featured in the 1986 film “Highlander” with Sean Connery and television shows like “Law and Order” and “Broad City.” After the Roy family vacations as commoners, the siblings head to Maru Karaoke Lounge in Koreatown where they rent a private room and unknowingly have a final conversation with their father.

South Street Seaport

South Street Seaport

175 Front St, New York, NY 10038, USA

Before everyone boards the Hornblower boat bound for Connor and Willa’s Ellis Island wedding, friends and family of the betrothed meet at Pier 15 at the South Street Seaport for cocktails, gossip and intrigue galore. The seaport is located in Manhattan where Fulton Street meets the East River and has the largest concentration of early-19th-century commercial buildings in New York City. It was also once the setting of the Fulton Fish Market — a historic market established in 1822 that has since relocated to Hunts Point in the Bronx. The historic district also appeared in the film “Gangs of New York,” Anthony Bourdain’s debut show “A Cook’s Tour,” and was the set of the Sub Pop version of Nirvana’s 1990 “In Bloom” music video.

Think Coffee

Think Coffee

Think Coffee (many locations)

350 Broadway, New York, NY, USA

“Succession” fans drawn to Kendall and Stewy Hosseini’s (Arian Moayed) chaotic relationship will no doubt remember when the “eldest boy” and his fair-weather friend first met up at a buzzy Manhattan coffee shop during season one. The memorable moment when Stewy (a very rich man) hops over the counter to steal a doughnut was filmed at Think Coffee. While there are locations of the third-wave coffee shop across New York City, you’ll want to stop by the Tribeca location for the “Succession” experience and enjoy the good light from their massive windows and globe light fixtures. Order a coffee and pastry while you’re there and make sure to pay, unlike Kendall’s favorite frenemy.

World Trade Center and 28 Liberty Street

28 Liberty Street, New York, NY, USA

Much of “Succession” is set in the Waystar Royco headquarters, which are rumored to have been modeled after Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp offices. While the set designers may have taken inspiration from the Australian billionaire’s headquarters, the first two seasons of “Succession” were primarily shot at the World Trade Center in 4 WTC and 7 WTC, though some scenes were shot on a soundstage. Season three and four saw the filming location move to 28 Liberty Street, a building that has also been used in the Showtime series “Billions,” a show that coincidentally has an episode named “Succession.”

Bonus spots (outside of NYC)

Jule Pond, the Henry Ford II Estate

Jule Pond, the Henry Ford II Estate

Jule Pond, the Henry Ford II Estate

90 Jule Pond Drive, Southampton, NY 11968, USA

When it comes to houses, the Roy family lives astronomically large. They’ve collected townhomes and penthouses across Manhattan and beyond, including Logan Roy’s “summer palace” in the Hamptons. At the top of the second season, the patriarch of the Roy clan assembles his family for a meeting after Shiv and Tom’s wedding. Eventually, Logan and Kendall discover a bag of dead raccoons stuffed in the chimney that has caused the 20,000-square-foot, 12-bedroom, 12-bathroom mansion to become malodorous. The episode was shot at real life mega-estate Jule Pond on Mecox Bay in Southampton. The property was built in the 1960s for Henry Ford’s grandson and claims to have the largest ocean frontage in all of the Hamptons at just shy of a quarter of a mile. In November 2021, the 42-acre property sold for $105 million, down from its original listing price of $175 million. Despite the $70 million price drop, it became the most expensive property sale on the East End.

Whiteface Lodge

Whiteface Lodge

Whiteface Lodge

7 Whiteface Inn Ln, Lake Placid, NY 12946, USA

Season two, episode six of “Succession” sees the brothers grim (Kendall and Roman) head to the media conference Argestes with Logan Roy and Tom Wambsgans, where Logan attempts to lock down an acquisition agreement with the Pierce family for PGM. The PGM buyout doesn’t end up happening, derailed by the Waystar Royco Cruises scandal. The Argestes conference was primarily filmed at the Whiteface Lodge on the banks of Lake Placid, though some scenes were filmed at Lake George. We love that the Whiteface Lodge is nestled in the Adirondacks in the shade of Whiteface Mountain, where the Winter Olympics were held in 1932 and again in 1980. Visit the region during the winter to hit the slopes or in the summertime to enjoy watersports like canoeing, fishing, and swimming. The tranquil resort has a log cabin feel with warm wood furnishings. Spring for a one-bedroom deluxe suite with a fireplace in the winter and stop by the spa any time for a detoxifying full body mud wrap.
