A Guide to “Evil” Filming Locations

BY Hilary Harty | October 30, 2024

Set in and around New York City, the supernatural show “Evil,” from creators of ‘The Good Wife,” wrapped its 50-episode run in August. The procedural series followed a group investigating supernatural phenomena and starred an ensemble cast led by Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi and Michael Emerson. The supernatural drama spanned four seasons from 2019 through 2024 and it gave us a whole new spooky way to see New York City and the surrounding area. Here is our guide to “Evil” filming locations in New York.

Astoria Park - Queens

Astoria Park, 19th St, Astoria, NY, USA

Much of the series was filmed on location in Queens, New York, particularly in Astoria. A fixture of the series is Astoria Park, a nearly 60-acre park on the banks of Hell Gate, a strait of the East River, and while filming for “Evil” may have wrapped, you can still visit the park and take in the ether of the supernatural series. The park is just a quarter mile from the Bouchard family home and Hell Gate Bridge, two other spots that are regularly featured in the series. We recommend checking the New York City Parks website next summer and attending one of their movie nights.

Bouchard Family Home - Queens

2234 21st Street, Astoria, Queens, NY, USA

Located at 2234 21st Street in Astoria, Queens near the East River, the Bouchard family home is where Kristen lives with her four daughters and husband, Andy Bouchard, played by Patrick Brammall, when he’s not climbing mountains. Numerous scenes took place in the family home, including tender moments where Kristen played with her kids in the yard and spooky instances of sleep paralysis when the family was terrorized by a reoccurring monster named George.

Broadway Stages - Brooklyn

259 Green St, Brooklyn, NY 11222, USA

When the cast and crew weren’t filming on location throughout New York City, many interior shots were filmed at Broadway Stages in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Throughout all four seasons, “Evil” used the sound stages as locations for the offices of the church that Ben, Kristen, and David work for. As one of the largest production companies in New York, Broadway Stages has over 60 soundstages scattered across Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Queens with more on the way. The studios have also been used to film series including “The Gilded Age,” “Elsbeth,” and “Harlem,” among others.

Hell Gate Bridge – Queens

Hell Gate Bridge, New York, NY, USA

The Hell Gate Bridge is filmed several times in “Evil” which means you’ll be used to the sound of rushing trains crossing the bridge by the time you polish off the fourth and final season. Stretching 17,000 feet, the bridge stands above the Bouchard family home and carries both passenger and freight trains over Hell Gate, a strait of the East River between Queens and Wards Island.

St. John's Preparatory School

St. John’s Preparatory School – Queens

21-21 Crescent St, Astoria, NY 11105, USA

In “7 Swans A Singin” (season one, episode 10), Ben, David, and Kristen, visit a private school to find that four singing high school students are unable to sing a song outside of a particular melody, in this case, a song from an internet video called “Pudsy’s Christmas.” As the gang investigates the strange phenomenon, the behavior spreads like wildfire throughout the school and eventually, even Kristen’s daughters sing the song at the family home. All three of the investigators believe that the possession may be due to stuck song syndrome or potentially, asbestos at the campus – though an escalation in the school cafeteria quashes those beliefs. Filming for the school scenes took place at St. John’s Preparatory School in Astoria, Queens, a private Roman Catholic high school that was established in 1870 and has been at its current location since 1981.

St. Josaphat’s Monastery – Glen Cove, NY

1 E Beach Dr, Glen Cove, NY 11542, USA

Perhaps the show’s most iconic episode, “S Is for Silence” (season 2, episode 7), sees David, Kristen, and Ben spend an episode in a silent monastery whilst searching for evidence of a miracle to submit a deceased monk for sainthood. Nearly the entire episode is spent in silence as the squad searches for answers within the walls of Sacred Trinity Monastery. The episode was filmed at St. Josaphat’s Monastery on Long Island, which was designed in 1916 by Bertram Goodhue and landed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The monastery is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. on Sundays, Monday through Saturday at 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and otherwise, by appointment.

Yonkers City Hall – Yonkers, NY

Yonkers City Hall, South Broadway, Yonkers, NY, USA

Before Kristen begins working with David and Ben to investigate all things supernatural, the forensic psychologist works with the Queens District Attorney’s office as an expert witness, regularly testifying against defendants in cases. In the first episode of the series, “Genesis 1,” Kristen is seen testifying at the Queens Court House, though both exterior and interior shots were filmed at the majestic and slightly eerie Yonkers City Hall. Located in Washington Park in downtown Yonkers, the building was completed in 1912 and features a Beaux-Arts façade.
