Best Things to Do In Traverse City, Mich.

BY Matt Meltzer | October 11, 2024

Welcome to Fifty Grande’s Best of the U.S. Bucket List series. This is your one-stop travel guide to the best, most unique and quintessential experiences of a place. Curated by experts, vetted by in-the-know locals, this is all you need to have the best trip ever. If we’ve written a Bucket List, we recommend you go. If it’s on this list, it’s the best the city has to offer right now. Consider this your answer to “What are the best things to do in Traverse City?”

After you arrive, the first thing you’ll learn is that “Traverse City” is not pronounced like the verb. The emphasis is on the first syllable, and if you want to avoid some annoyed looks, that’s a good point to remember. Once you nail that bit of local linguistics, the people are welcoming. There’s nothing pretentious about about this Northern Michigan spot, even though it’s got plenty to brag about.

The next surprise: Traverse City is like a slice of wine country on the Great Lakes, with vineyards lining gorgeous lakeside hills and solid food downtown. The city isn’t exactly quaint; business has been booming in recent years and you’ll find plenty of tourists and recent transplants in its bars, restaurants and breweries. But the crowds haven’t spoiled the atmosphere like in some other newly popular destinations, and that’s part of what makes Traverse City attractive.

There are a lot of ways to spend a day around Traverse City. It’s a place to explore the Lake Michigan shore along meandering hiking trails, then retire to a hotel on the beach. Or perhaps you pass an afternoon hopping hilltop wineries, then relax with a hearty dinner by the water. Here’s a look at all the best places in Traverse City to eat, drink and get outside.

You’re here for wine tours and tastings

If you’re not from the Midwest, you might not think of Michigan as having anything you’d call “wine country,” but if you put a postcard of Napa or Sonoma next to a postcard of Old Mission, you’d be forgiven for thinking they’re the same place. Traverse City’s grapes spread across two peninsulas, Leelanau and Old Mission. Old Mission has a higher concentration of vineyards, with wineries running up and down its main road, while Leelanau is more of a country escape. The bottles they produce might not be what you’re used to tasting in more famous wine destinations like Napa, but a few Traverse City wines, mostly whites, have won awards. Napa doesn’t have the same water views as Traverse, either. Wineries around here overlook Lake Michigan, and Napa can’t compete with that.

If you’re big into bubbly, Mawby Sparkling Wines is a family-owned operation set atop a hill overlooking rolling fields of vineyards. Their signature sparkling wine is called Sex, which lends itself to lots of fun, wine-infused innuendo. If bubbles aren’t your thing, head upstairs to bigLITTLE where you can try a collection of whites. Pro tip: Make reservations far ahead for weekend visits; the Mawby patio gets packed.

Black Star Farms on the Leelanau Peninsula shows just how pretty Traverse City’s wineries can be, where horse fences and a restored barn front views of the vineyards. The tasting room feels like eating inside an old riding stable and serves a great collection of vintage red blends. There’s also a luxe hotel onsite in a 19th-century mansion, if you want to make it a whole wine-tasting weekend on the farm.

This relative newcomer to the Traverse City wine scene, Mari Vineyards has gotten some big publicity thanks to its owner Marty Lagina, who you may remember from “The Curse of Oak Island.” It doesn’t turn its cable TV celebrity owner into a gimmick, though: the tasting room looks like an Italian villa.

No discussion of Traverse City wines is complete without mentioning Chateau Grand Traverse, the OG TC winemaker that’s been bottling juice for over 50 years. The stately ranch is set right above the bay and has stunning vistas from the property. The tastings are good, too, with personalized samplings so you can try pretty much whatever you like.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

The must-see natural stunner of Grand Traverse Bay is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, a swath of Lake Michigan waterfront whose beaches look like they could be ripped from the Caribbean. Jump in the water and you’ll instantly know you’re in the Great Lakes (it’s cold), but the lake is refreshing after hiking two miles over sand dunes to the beach. The Dune Climb is the park’s signature experience, but if you’re not up for the exertion you can still take in the scenery along the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a 7.4-mile road with a dozen places to pull over and appreciate the view. The park is also home to North and South Manitou islands, remote spaces where nature runs wild.

One of the benefits of having freezing cold waters is that shipwrecks stay immaculately preserved. The Manitou Passage Underwater Preserve has 16 shipwrecks to explore, including the Westmoreland and its millions of dollars worth of gold coins. If its 180-foot depth is a little too advanced, check out the Francisco Morazan, a 247-foot freighter whose hull now sits under only 12 feet of water.

Michigan beer gets a lot of good press. While Grand Rapids is the state’s biggest beer destination, Traverse City has some great spots too.

The folks behind this waterfront distillery are doing some crazy things with their spirits, including crafting a whiskey from Rosen rye — a long-forgotten Michigan grain grown on South Manitou Island. They’re also attempting to salvage whiskey from a century-old shipwreck in Lake Michigan, though that’s not on tap just yet at the time of this writing. For now, try a whiskey tasting or craft cocktails and see how their above-water stuff stacks up.

The XXX Straight Bourbon is the signature spirit, but since you’re in town, you might as well try the American Cherry and Michigan Apple whiskeys too. They taste far more natural and clean than some of the artificial infusions you’ll find, and are especially enjoyable when sipped on the shipping container patio.
