Best Things to Do in the Florida Keys

BY Rob LeDonne | February 5, 2023

Welcome to Fifty Grande’s Best of the U.S. Bucket List series. This is your one-stop travel guide to the best, most unique and quintessential experiences of a city, state or event. Want to know how to “do” the Florida Keys? We’ve got you covered. Curated by experts, vetted by in-the-know locals, this is all you need to have the best trip ever. If we’ve written a Bucket List, we recommend you go. If it’s on this list, it’s the best the city has to offer right now. Consider this your one-stop answer to “What are the best things to do in the Florida Keys?”

It’s a narrow strip of land just off the southern tip of Florida that amounts to a sunny oasis. The Florida Keys has been a getaway for snowbirds and those seeking sun-drenched adventures for a century thanks to its temperate beaches, countless resorts of renown and huge hunks of creamy Key lime pie. Starting with the northernmost community of Key Largo and extending all the way south through Islamorada to Marathon, Duck and the famed Key West, each successive key has a shoreline or beach bar ideal for relaxed vacationers, wild party animals or anyone in between. So make like Flipper (yeah, that was filmed here) and swim on down to unlock all of the Keys has to offer.

YOU'RE HERE FOR RESORT CULTURE THAT REIGNS SUPREME

If you’re coming to the Keys, staying at a resort is the way to go with built-in accommodations, pools aplenty and quality grub. Better yet, there’s one for every budget.

Isla Bella

ISLA BELLA

1 Knights Key Blvd, Marathon, FL, USA

Isla Bella is a luxury property that stays true to its name. It’s consistently considered one of the best resorts not just in the Keys, but the entire U.S. From its expansive lobby with a picture-perfect view of the ocean to getting ushered to your room via golf cart, everywhere you turn is an eye-popping Instagram story waiting to happen. Aside from a private beach and the bevy of aquatic adventures it brings, you can wade in multiple pools (including a massive one where kids play and a pool exclusively for the adults), munch some of the best food on the island at Mahina (more on this later) and stop by the Marketplace for mouthwatering breakfast sandwiches. But you’re at a resort, so be prepared for activities like weekly guided walks over the nearby Seven Mile Bridge to trivia and outdoor dance parties complete with a DJ manning the turntables.

Whether you’re traveling by car or taking it by foot or bike, with water all around you and the glorious sun shining down, it’s a stretch you won’t soon forget. Continue further south to Key West to visit the Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S., which is marked with a monument that sits on the edge of the ocean a mere 90 miles from Cuba.

Located in Marathon Key, this hospital is for one reptile only: the humble sea turtle. The hospital dedicates itself to rehabbing injured turtles, advocating on the turtles’ behalf and educating the general public. The park holds historic reenactments on the third weekend of every month, but the beach is the real star of this show. Located at the southern end of the park, the beach is also a spot for picnicking, snorkeling, paddling and fishing.

Italian may not be the first thing one thinks of when they jaunt to the Keys. However, this Italian restaurant located on the property of the aforementioned Postcard Inn serves up delectable Italian grub. Dip your bread into a plate of quality olive oil (with the restaurant’s name cutely written on the dish in balsamic) before ordering up a plate of crispy, perfectly tender calamari, and wash it all down with one of their array of wines from the world over. As it turns out, pasta might be the perfect post-swim snack. Breakfast here is also a modestly priced, high-quality treat as well.

End Your Day and Stay With Some Pie

A visit to the Florida Keys is not complete without the beloved regional treat of Key lime pie, born here in the ’30s and a staple ever since. There are a bevy of places to grab a quality slice, all made with various individual touches. The most famous of the bunch is Key West’s Key Lime Pie Co., which utilizes fresh Key lime juice. Mahina, the restaurant in Marathon on Isla Bella’s property, serves ’em by the slice with a fresh-made graham cracker crust. One of the best deals, however, are the pies served at Islamorada Fish Co.: The cost of an entire pie is just as much as the price of two slices elsewhere. We dare you not to eat the whole thing in one sitting.
