Best Things to Do in Jacksonville

BY Matt Meltzer | May 14, 2023

You want to know the things to do in Jacksonville, Florida? Well, welcome to Fifty Grande’s Best of the U.S. series. This is your one-stop travel guide to the best, most unique and quintessential experiences of a place. Want to know how to “do” the Jacksonville, Florida? We’ve got you covered. Curated by experts, vetted by in-the-know locals, this is all you need to have a great time. If we’ve written a Bucket List, we recommend you go. If it’s on this list, it’s the best the city has to offer right now. Consider this your one-stop answer to “What are the best things to do in Jacksonville?”

For years, the lower 48’s largest city by land mass was a punch line of sorts, known best for its pulp mill odor and botching of a Super Bowl. However, Jacksonville might be America’s most improved over the past couple of decades, a more affordable, laid-back and less crowded urban beach destination that many people know little about.

Jacksonville is a city of historic neighborhoods, where artists — who can still afford to live here — fill vintage stores, coffee shops and independent restaurants. It’s a place where the barriers to entry are low in every industry, and young creatives can have an impact. Put all that next to some great beaches, and you start to realize that Jacksonville is a pretty cool scene. And we’ve got all you need to blow the top off this slept-on city.

Explore the beaches

The beaches might be a little different in northeast Florida than you’d find in Miami or the panhandle, but if you’re into surfing, beach bars and nature they’re still among the country’s best.

Atlantic Beach

Atlantic Beach, FL, USA

This little beach town in the center of Jacksonville’s beaches feels more like California than it does Florida — probably because it’s one of the top surf towns in the state. Surf shops are interspersed among yoga studios and fresh juice bars on the streets leading up to the sand.

Jax Beach

On a warm spring Saturday, nowhere in Jacksonville brings the beach party quite like Jax Beach. This is the area’s top beach for bars, and its nightlife has a far younger crowd than that of neighboring towns. The partiers stick around after the sun goes down, too, crowding places like Lynch’s Pub and Hoptinger well into the early morning.

Technically, the Guana River Preserve sits just south of the city closer to Ponte Vedra. But step across the golden dunes and onto the unspoiled coastline and you might think you’ve crossed an ocean. The wild, empty beach calls to mind remote stretches of sand in Africa, and relaxing here for an afternoon will have you forgetting downtown is only half an hour away.

One of the most stunning beachside landscapes in Florida, Boneyard Beach is a graveyard of oak and cedar trees that fell to earth when a sudden tidal shift pushed saltwater into their roots. The result is one of the most eerie beach scenes in Florida, and one of the top photo locations in Jacksonville.

Nabes to Know

Jacksonville is sprawling, so once you land in a neighborhood you’ll probably want to spend some time there. The beaches we mentioned above are all good places to post up, but if you want to delve into the city and its culture, here’s three places to check out.

San Marco

Grand old homes and towering oak trees line the streets as soon as you cross over to the south bank of the St. Johns River from downtown into San Marco. Once you’ve arrived at San Marco Square, park your car and pop around the upscale boutiques, wine bars and whiskey lounges that fill the neighborhood’s core. Stop into Town Hall or Taverna and feel the energy of two of the most popular restaurants in the city, or hit Four Score Golf Tavern and knock back some beers while challenging your friends on one of their rentable golf simulators.

Riverside/Avondale

Riverside, Jacksonville, FL, USA

These abutting neighborhoods along the St. Johns River are easily Jacksonville’s most alluring, filled with historic homes, bars, restaurants and vintage shops. It’s the only part of Jacksonville that one might call “walkable,”’ where you can meander from the weekly farmer’s market under the bridge to the Cummer Museum of Art and on to the funky shops and beer bars in Five Points. Along the way, you’ll find Stockton Street, one of the best food streets in Florida, where coffee, curry and tapas converge.

Downtown and Bayfront

Downtown, Jacksonville, FL, USA

Jacksonville’s skyline may not be large, but it is one of the most recognizable in the country with its colorful bridges and iconic Wells Fargo Center. Below the buildings you’ll find a place that’s surprisingly lively, where the local symphony hall sits right on the water and the retro Florida Theatre sits in the heart of the action. You’ll also find a jogging and running path along the St. Johns River, complete with pathside exercise equipment. Residents are slowly starting to fill the stately old high-rises from the 1930s, making ground-floor restaurants like Bellwether and Indochine more popular than they already were.

Once known as the Gator Bowl, TIAA Bank Field first gained notoriety as the home to the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party — the annual Florida-Georgia football game. In the 1990s, the Jacksonville Jaguars moved in and instantly became a citywide obsession. While the team is typically out of contention early, tailgates are always a great time as sunshine and barbecues run well into December. Tickets tend to be easier to get than in other cities, too, though after last year’s playoff run that may change.
