Welcome to Fifty Grande’s Best of the U.S. Bucket List series. This is your one-stop travel guide to the best, most unique and quintessential experiences of a city, state or event. Want to know how to “do” Huntsville, Alabama? We’ve got you covered. Curated by experts, vetted by in-the-know locals, this is all you need to have the best trip ever. If we’ve written a Bucket List, we recommend you go. If it’s on this list, it’s the best the city has to offer right now. Consider this your one-stop answer to “What are the best things to do in Huntsville, Alabama?”

Huntsville will surprise you. Alabama’s newly crowned largest city offers a very different vibe than other parts of the state or even the South. The small Tennessee Valley city went through a population boom in the 1950s as former German scientists relocated to the area for the space industry. (Yes, it’s a space hub.) Assisting with the Apollo lunar landing program gave it the nickname the Rocket City, which still sticks today. The heyday of the space program is long gone, but the high-tech jobs that came with it stayed. Now the new reasons to visit have nothing to do with space but with the beautiful outdoors and food and drink scenes. Let’s take a tour.

If you are looking for something more laid-back, try a round on their disc golf course.

Seasonal shows at the onsite planetarium guide you through the constellations, planets and stars. Attractions like the Flight Simulator Experience and Multi-Axis Trainer allow an in-person experience of what astronauts go through during preparation for missions. For those really wanting the full experience, prepare to get wet, book in advance and bring your bathing suit to undertake various underwater astronaut trainings and virtual reality adventures. Those run from snorkeling to even full-fledged scuba diving.

They are the minor baseball team with the coolest nickname in sports. The Double-A affiliate for the Los Angeles Angels play their home games just outside the city at Toyota Field. Their name is an obvious nod to the area’s connection with space exploration, but the raccoon mascot, Sprocket, gives a wink to a certain “Guardians of the Galaxy” character and has been a smash success for the team since it was unveiled in 2018.

Community is the emphasis at this Five Points restaurant and tavern that sources ingredients from the local farms and was built on a sustainable food restaurant model. They’ve garnered lots of local attention for a dish that stuffs the grits inside fried shrimp, but we all suggest trying the duck leg.
