“It’s not a motorcycle, baby, it’s a chopper.” If you’ve ever quoted that famous Bruce Willis line from “Pulp Fiction,” chances are you’ve probably heard of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Rally. Since its inception in 1938, the rally has evolved from a simple bike show to a nine-day mecca for the seatbelt-averse. Classic rock headliners? Check. Lingerie wrestling followed by a burping contest? Double check. The Buffalo Chip is the beating heart of the rally, with four stages blasting the likes of Willie Nelson, Alice Cooper and Stevie Nicks—all past headliners.
The rally’s “Sons of Anarchy” ethos was perhaps best exemplified in 2020, when Sturgis became one of the biggest events to forgo COVID-19 safety precautions. The media storm that followed put the rally in political crosshairs, but the Buffalo Chip hasn’t backed down, and neither has attendance. 2023 will likely be a bumper year, seeing as ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Lita Ford are all performing on the main stage.
The Buffalo Chip is also one of the few places to legally camp in the small town of Sturgis, South Dakota (before 1982, people used to sleep in the public park). What better way to wake up than to the roar of half a million motorcycles outside your tent? May I suggest you splurge on a pair of noise-canceling headphones if you plan on staying the night.

When is the Buffalo Chip Official Sturgis Rally Kickoff Party?
The kickoff party is on Friday, Aug. 4, “with the Support Bikers Moto Meetup,” according to the website, at the Big Engine Bar at 4 p.m. Don’t be confused by the Sturgis Rally Bikini Beach Pre-Party (my GOD) which is Monday, July 31. That is the party before the party that kicks off the best party ever.
Why is the stage called the Wolfman Jack Stage?
The performer’s stage is named after one of the Chip’s early performers, famed radio personality Wolfman Jack. They refere to the stage as the “heartbeat” of “the Best Party Anywhere” (the tagline for the rally).

Can I camp at Buffalo Chip 2023?
Yes. The Buffalo Chip campground is 600 acres set aside for camping. Your options at the rally are: tent camping, plus options for EZ camping, concierge camping, RV camping, VIP camping and more.
Can I camp at Fenske Park?
Fenske Park is where you can VIP camp. The secured area is located directly behind the amphitheater and will give you exclusive privileges (free beer, free buffet-style dinner, access to restricted concert-viewing areas, etc.).
Is the Buffalo Chip and the motorcycle rally the same thing?
The Buffalo Chip Campground is the venue. It’s located just off of Main Street at
20622 Fort Meade Way, Sturgis, South Dakota 57785. It is a place for motorcycle races and host to music festivals. The annual 10-day concert series and motorcycle rally in August is the Sturgis Motorcyle Rally. The festival has dubbed itself “The Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling” and “The Best Party Anywhere.”
Is the Death Wire Daredevil Spectacular happening?
Oh, yes. The Death Wire Daredevil Spectacular raises money for Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and is scheduled for August 10.
