It’s not a festival for fair weather friends: last year, despite a blizzard warning and a torrential downpour, Los Angeles’s Skyline Festival partied hard, braving power outages, slick dance floors and mud. Free ponchos were handed out, warm clothing encouraged and small umbrellas allowed. Most fans embraced the unexpected deluge — returning home bedraggled and smelling like a wet dog is, after all, a sign of a most delicious rave.
LA’s Skyline Festival is a relatively new event, curated by Insomniac, a music group that organizes dance festivals across the country, like Electric Daisy Carnival and III Points. While the genre here is solidly house and techno, last year’s lineup ran the gambit between mainstream sensations like Diplo and Charlotte de Witte and underground musicians and DJs like Berliner Stella Bossi (and oft-time Insta comedienne) and Italian trio Meduza. This year’s lineup includes sets from LA native Juliet Mendoza and soul-house fusion project Life On Planets.
You can expect art installations such as glowing laser shows, life-size murals and live graffiti painting, set to a hailstorm of techno beats and house riffs. Grab a sourdough pizza from one of the many food trucks and head to the dance floor for sets reminiscent of psychedelic trances — or psytrance, for short.
The festival has grown each year due to increasing demand, and will expand this February into Downtown LA’s Gloria Molina Grand Park, a 12-acre green space that’s no stranger to hosting music festivals.
