In northeast Oklahoma, the sleepy town of Pryor, population just under 9,000, will flood with tens of thousands of hard rockers for three blazing days at the end of August for Rocklahoma. Rocklahoma prides itself on “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Rock,” loading itself to the brim with 80s and 90s rock, metal and post-grunge. In years past, that meant headlining performances from ZZ Top, Limp Bizkit, Guns N’ Roses and unofficial artist residencies from Rob Zombie and Papa Roach. This year, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed and Slipknot will headline across three stages.
Even though Rocklahoma — which calls itself “America’s biggest Labor Day party” — is technically rain or shine, the occasional tornado has been known to sweep through the area and postpone an Anthrax set here and there. On that note, if you’d like to avoid the likely event of a human tornado, also known as a mosh pit, bring a lawn chair or blanket and hang back in the more mellow general admission seating. Rocklahoma veterans will tell you the real fun happens at the campgrounds, anyway.
Different tiers get you different levels of luxury on the campground, though all have access to the complimentary coffee bar — which is helpful since the campground’s official quiet hours don’t start until 4 AM. and only last until 8 AM. The Headliner option will score you a pre-set tent complete with a bed frame and mattress, pillows and bedding, portable air conditioner, floor rugs and power strips. If you choose to bring your own inflatable pool, Rocklahoma will fill it with 300 gallons of Oklahoma’s finest water for 50 bucks, and they’ll even provide the pool for a cool $100. It’s camping so glam, it’s basically not camping at all. Rock on.
