Maine Lobster Festival 2024

JULY 31, 2024 - AUGUST 04, 2024
ROCKLAND, ME

THE SHORT VERSION

Grungy fishermen and preppy tourists unite at a lobster-themed carnival in Rockland, Maine.

Lobsters, L.L.Bean boots, and gritty Maine accents abound at the annual Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland, Maine. The seaside town is grungier than some of its preppy counterparts — think Camden or Wiscasset—and a busy fishing port, while still being a popular tourist town. The result is a charming main street with a low-key, outdoorsy, salt-of-the-earth energy — and the Lobster Festival, which is free, appeals to both.

Running from July 31 to August 4, 2024, the festival is family-friendly by day with carnival rides, like the Yo-Yo, and grub, like elephant ears. By night, it’s a party for townies and tourists, with loud music and local bars staying open late. Ultimately, it feels like a county fair with a nautical, lobster theme; you can watch a lobster fisherman pull in a crate of fresh ones from the Ferris Wheel, or dunk a claw into melted butter right after a dip in the sea that surrounds the vendors and fair rides.

A significant draw is the Maine Seafood Cooking Contest, slated for 9 a.m., Friday, August 2 this year, where amateur chefs (anyone 18 or older can apply to participate) dazzle spectators with local seafood. Last year, the winning dish was Lobster Andouille Sausage and Grits. This event not only produces some drool-worthy seafood (in the past there have been dishes like lobster mac n cheese and lobster ceviche for purchase), but also emphasizes the importance of local seafood to Maine’s culture and economy—Maine accounts for over 80% of all lobsters landed in the United States.

For those looking for more structured activities, the festival includes live music. This year, Dirty Deeds – The AC/DC Experience and Spencer and the Walrus are on the books. Additionally, there are arts and crafts tents where local artisans display their work, selling unique souvenirs and gifts, as well as the popular annual festival posters that locals love to collect over the years.
