Los Angeles is full of itself. Has been forever. And while we tire of Angelenos bragging about their city’s cultural clout, we also know they have a point. It’s this influence on culture-at-large via artistic achievement that will be celebrated at Penske Media’s LA3C. The festival name stands for Los Angeles (LA) Capital of Culture and Creativity (3C).
Last year, LA3C was held in Los Angeles State Historic Park in Chinatown. This year the event will disperse among multiple venues across downtown Los Angeles. Four of them, Marketplace on Main, the Palace Theater, the Theater at Ace Hotel, and the Orpheum Theater, will primarily host the musical guests, which include Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu and Questlove. The Los Angeles Theater, in addition to hosting Kamasi Washington, will screen programming by Women Under the Influence, a cinema collective that highlights women in film. The last venue, Bazaar on Broadway, will be home to a shopping thoroughfare run by Black Market Flea, a LA-based market that highlights local Black-owned businesses and vendors. Bazaar on Broadway will also have live sunset jazz and a record shop run by In Sheep’s Clothing all weekend long, as well as a sprawling food market of local Los Angeles restaurants. The food options range from Korean barbeque to Neapolitan pizza to Turkish breakfast food and more.
As the festival has moved indoors, seating capacity is limited and first come, first serve. Unless you’re willing to cough up extra for the VIP tickets, make sure to get to the shows far enough ahead of time for a good spot, but no more than an hour before the show starts.
