“Jam Cruise 20,” as Jam Cruise will be known this year, is setting off from Miami in February, closing out two decades of tropical funk cruises. This year, Jam Cruise will make two stops along its six-day route in Montego Bay, Jamaica and Grand Cayman, but above all, it’s a music festival, with artists playing eight stages scattered throughout the cruise ship. Cruise venues range from typical theater and jazz club settings — which one could almost imagine are like you never got on a boat — to the sprawling pool deck and atrium of the ship.
Artists like Perpetual Groove, Lettuce and The HillBenders will play a mix of rock, funk, jazz and bluegrass. Most artists on the cruise play two shows over the course of the week and otherwise wander about the ship with attendees — partly for the interactive musical environment, and partly because they can’t leave. Venues like the jazz lounge also have impromptu jams from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
The real stars of the Jam Cruise, however, are the festival’s signature BBCs, a cocktail consisting of Baileys, bananas, rum and pina colada mix — which might explain why everyone’s still so happy on day six.
