Is it possible for something to be chill and hype at the same time? Somehow, the Holo Holo Music Festival in Las Vegas seems to manage it. Whether you want to experience Hawaiian culture for the first time, or you’re a long-standing fan of some slack-key guitar and reggae, the Holo Holo Music Festival brings the music of the islands to the desert. From classic reggae icons like Fiji and Maoli, to the soft acoustic sounds of 19-year-old Iam Tongi, artists with Native Hawaiian and Polynesian roots take the stage to have you dancing by the front stage or vibing on some beach towels at the back.
After a successful first year with events in California and Nevada, Holo Holo returns first to Las Vegas as the more practical, and perhaps even more ethical, travel option to your island vacation dreams. Las Vegas is not the first place you’d think of as a Hawaii stand-in, but it’s home to a large and growing Hawaiian population — so much so that it’s known as the Ninth Island. The sounds of island reggae with the ukulele center-stage fit right into the city and it’s why festival organizers picked the location.
Drawn to more affordable living conditions despite the drastic shift in scenery, the Hawaiian community has been eager to maintain their language and traditions. Last year, the festival brought in local Hawaiian food vendors who served up traditional and fusion dishes like Kalua pork, Huli Huli chicken, and poke nachos, but you can go in and out of the venue with the GA tickets if you want to explore even more classic foods around the city (just don’t bring the food back inside).
