You can tell a lot about an event from its sponsors. The stages at Greenville Country Music Festival blast advertisements for ZYN Nicotine Pouches and Budweiser, Monster Energy and the US Marine Corps. This is, after all, South Carolina: country roots run deep, and this festival just keeps getting bigger. Organizers have extended the festival by one day per year since its inception; this year, its third, will pack bull riding, axe-throwing, line dancing, tailgating, beer, food trucks, and, of course, country music into three days.
Headliner Cody Johnson, or “CoJo,” keeps things classic with his contemporary country hits. He shouts out his wife and the joys of beer in his twangy, guitar-heavy ballads. The 23-year-old Bailey Zimmerman, whose new album “Religiously” shows a picture of him with tear-stained cheeks, echoes CoJo’s mournful country-boy vibe but with a more poppy, youthful spin––think Olivia Rodrigo, but and country. Ashland Craft, one of the festival’s four female performers, has a smaller fanbase, but raspy, tantalizing vocals and less typically-country themes: one popular song she features on is called “I Smoke Weed,” an anti-bar anthem.
South Carolinans go all out for this weekend-long celebration of all things country. Cowboy boots and cowboy hats; denim; American flags. If you’re wearing your most patriotic getup, it probably could be even more red white and blue. Greenville Country Music Festival is all about getting down with these Americana roots. If you want to commit, you can stay in the RV park, with no showers or electricity; but after all that mud, you might need a nearby hotel to rinse and repeat.
