Nestled on the southeastern tip of Alaska’s panhandle, Haines is a town cradled by towering mountains and situated at the end of a grand fjord. A mere 45 miles from the U.S.-Canadian border, it’s a treasure for outdoor enthusiasts — as well as connoisseurs of fine craft beers. Each spring, Haines welcomes approximately 25 of the finest breweries and cideries from Alaska and the Yukon for a festival known locally as Haines Beerfest, officially titled The Great Alaska Craft Beer And Home Brew Festival. It’s a casual gathering of beer drinkers and those just looking to enjoy some acoustic music and company in the remote landscape.
The festivities traditionally kick off with an optional (and additional cost) Gourmet Brewers’ Dinner, which was hosted last year by local chef Travis Kukull. His locally inspired dishes included beet-cured salmon lox and black sunchoke crudo, showcasing Alaska’s natural ingredients. Saturday is the main festival day; think an outdoor arena packed with folks in trucker hats and vests indulging in a variety of beer tastings, street food, and a few token carnival-style games. (2024’s brewery lineup has yet to be announced at the time of this writing.)
Responsibly, all taps close at 5 p.m. In turn, attendees get the chance to take advantage of the season’s late sunsets and enjoy an evening adventure in the last frontier — or a game of pool at the local watering hole.
