Whatever the weather or the world might throw at it, the grand summer party that is the Governors Ball will proceed as promised. Set up in a large grassy quadrant of the Flushing-Meadows Corona Park right next to the Unisphere — a giant globe in the park’s center — the three-night festival will be headlined by Post Malone, Rauw Alejandro, The Killers, 21 Savage, SZA and Peso Pluma. Governors Ball is a rain, shine or smoke kind of event, and last year’s festival went down just days after orange smog à la the Canadian wildfires filled the NYC skyline. Fast forward to day one: a rain and hail storm came down on performers and audiences. But what’s a few climatic hiccups when you’re young (or young at heart, yes, we see you too)?
The festival lineup is packed with more than 60 pop, rock, Latin and hip-hop stars. And it’s not just the audience that skews on the greener end of the age scale. This year, the 18-and-under house bands from the Queens and Brooklyn locations of School of Rock — which has a variety of after-school music programs — will have two sets during the festival. Other acts across the three stages include 23-year-old Palestinian-Algerian rapper Saint Levant, 19-year-old country singer Jessie Murph and K-pop boy group P1Harmony, whose average age is 20.5.
Locals and regulars of New York will know the seasonal Queens Night Market takes place in the same park. Once a week during the summer, the Night Market brings together over 100 food vendors representing countless cuisines, with all bites capped at a very affordable $6. Several vendors from the Night Market, like Mao’s Bao and Twisted Potato, will make an appearance in the festival’s Food Village. You might not be able to leave and re-enter the festival, but there’s a hard stop on the music at 10 p.m. so if you want to have the full experience, you can slide over to the Night Market which runs until midnight on Saturday.
Note: This year, Gov Ball introduced two new ticket types: 2-day bundles and Ultimate Tickets. The 2-day bundle allows fans to customize their festival experience. The ultra-premium Ultimate Ticket is a deluxe VIP package that includes presale access to Gov Ball After Dark. They also have GA+, VIP 3-Day and 1-Day tickets, again this year.
