Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival (or just Camp Flog Gnaw, which is Golf Wang, Tyler’s, the Creator’s clothing brand, backward). Originally named Odd Future Festival (or OFWGKTA Carnival), an homage to the hip-hop and comedy collective Tyler was a part of from 2007 until its hiatus in 2015, Camp Flog Gnaw long been revered for Tyler’s famously neurotic attention to detail. In the past, wifi stations were built into huge sculptures of converse-wearing feet that sprouted out of the ground like daffodils, and carnival rides, the ferris wheel included, acted as their own light shows, beaming patterned bright colors across the palm trees of Los Angeles’s Echo Park. The crowd, a cult-like group of Flog Gnaw followers, has come dressed as if to impress Tyler himself: bright pastels, chic floral button downs, boldly striped overalls and more bucket hats than you can imagine.
Yet, Tyler’s crowd has also become infamous. Camp Flog Gnaw made news in 2019 following a surprise Drake set turned sour. On the 2019 poster, positioned next to Tyler’s name, was a banner of question marks. Anticipation built and fans speculated that the surprise guest could be Frank Ocean. When Drake came out, disappointed fans booed him, and he stormed off stage. The coronavirus pandemic, and perhaps this controversy, one that angered Tyler, staved off a return of the festival until this November. Tyler hinted at its return in his appearance in the Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar music video for their song “Hillbillies,” and announced the dates, November 11 and 12, shortly after.
This year holds no surprises, with big-name acts like SZA, Ice Spice, the Hillbillies (a duo of Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem), and, of course, Tyler gracing the two Flog Gnaw stages. Restaurant vendors in previous years have spotlighted prominent Los Angeles restaurants including Kogi and Trejos Tacos. Additionally, carnival rides are included with the general admission pass, with games available and an unlimited game pass to match. As mentioned previously, gameplay includes prizes of festival merchandise as well as GOLF merchandise, Tyler’s clothing brand.
