The mix of artists at this year’s BeachLife is decidedly less local than last year’s set, yet the eclectic lineup — with artists from Canada to Greece to Australia — still captures that Southern California, beachside aesthetic, with rock, folk and reggae. True to that sound, headliners this year will be Incubus, My Morning Jacket and Sting. Several artists on the lineup have played at BeachLife in prior years, but 80’s Californian rock band Sugar Ray are the only ones to have played for all five iterations of the festival.
Taking place in Redondo Beach, the festival’s four stages will be in the Seaside Lagoon, a sandy spot that is turned into an enclosed salt-water lagoon through the summer season beginning at the end of May. Steps from the Pacific Ocean, the RipTide and LowTide stages are on the sand while the main HighTide stage is on astroturf next to the beach, and a cozy SpeakEasy Acoustic stage is tucked away on a side lot that also serves as the main entrance. The Daou SideStage on the LowTide Stage is the culinary center of the festival, with prix-fixe menus by celebrity chefs accompanying select sets, letting you eat gourmet on-stage next to the performance.
The sanded venue also makes for the ideal distraction for those bringing children, while keeping you close to the music. A designated kids zone will have sand toys as well as face painting, beach balls and painting supplies. Despite a venue capacity of 18,000, festival organizers have capped attendance at 11,000 to allow for a reasonably packed space that still gives you space to vibe along or build epic sand castles.
