Backwoods Music Festival is poised to take the throne of Southern EDM festivals. For years, Backwoods’ festival grounds at Mulberry Mountain were a haven of good vibes and judgment-free dancing in a state not known for its music scene. This open clearing on the edge of Arkansas’s Ozark National Forest was home to the beloved Wakarusa music festival, which shuttered in 2016 due to a conflict between the organizers. Since then, many others have vied to take its place, but Backwoods has won on its merits: consistent quality and a mountain of talent.
Some of that talent has included acts like The String Cheese Incident, The Polish Ambassador, and Papadosio. This year’s headliners are a mix of jam bands and DJs, including Thievery Corporation, Tycho and The Crystal Method. Four separate stages are nestled in the trees, along with an LED ferris wheel, art installations and a circus-themed casino. And since Backwoods is a camping festival, you can skip the long lines at the public showers and rinse off in the nearby waterfall instead. Just don’t get lost in the property’s sprawling 650 acres — they don’t call it Backwoods for nothing.
