After its successful comeback in 2023, Austin Psych Fest returns in the backyard at The Far Out Lounge in Austin, Texas. While the music venue only opened in 2019 — and was immediately voted “Best New Venue” at the Austin Music Awards in 2020 — the site has a long history in Austin. Willie Nelson shot movies there, Janis Joplin performed there, and in April it’ll be home to 2,500 swaying psychedelic rock fans.
Courtney Barnett, The Black Angels and Alvvays will headline three days of what the festival calls “psych rock, dream pop, and indie rock.” All three artists embody the festival’s vibe, which is that of a trip on psychedelics giving way to a night of rustic-whimsy (there is nothing that says “night under the stars” quite like a woman with an acoustic guitar). Every year, psychedelic projections are beamed onto the trees in this outdoor space, with this year’s festival seeing visual installations by Mad Alchemy, TV Eye and Drip//Cuts. In addition to performing on Saturday, April 27, festival founders The Black Angels will debut a new visual installation in collaboration with TV Eye.
The festival venue is home to food trucks plus indoor and outdoor bars. Austin Rotisserie will return in time for the spring, selling “perfectly roasted birds.” The venue also has salads, tacos and baguette sandwiches to enjoy under the wavy projections on their lawn.
