The San Francisco fog appears especially thick each 4/20 as cannabis lovers across the city flock to Golden Gate Park for their favorite holiday. 420 Hippie Hill is just what it sounds like: a community gathering at Hippie Hill, which has been renamed Robin Williams Meadow, with plenty of tie dye shirts, local food trucks, weed and vibes.
420 Hippie Hill has occurred since the ‘70s, but it wasn’t permitted or authorized by the city until 2022. The event remains free, though it is now restricted to those 21 and over, especially with the addition of a “farmers market” of cannabis products. The change, which first went into effect in 2022, has also allowed for fencing, port-a-potties and a sound system for performances. Last year, DJ Shortkut and comedian Jeff Ross performed, and boxer Mike Tyson appeared on stage to promote his cannabis brand Tyson 2.0.Unlike Grass Lands, which also occurs in Golden Gate Park as part of the annual Outside Lands Music Festival, 420 Hippie Hill is much more of a free-for-all, with groups scattered across colorful blankets and partaking in their weed method of choice. A permanent haze hangs over the grass; you’ll probably get a secondhand high. If you want the experience of a Cheech & Chong movie, this is the event for you.

FAQs
What’s the best way to get to and from the event? Given the event’s large crowd, the SF Municipal Transportation Agency recommends attendees walk, ride their bikes or take the Muni. Since roads are expected to close for periods of time (and many of those at the event will not be sober), it is not recommended to drive.
When should I arrive? 420 Hippie Hill begins at 10 am and ends at 5 pm? However, if you want the full experience, you need to be there at 4:20 pm. Plan to arrive early, as there are expected to be large crowds.
Are bongs allowed inside the event? Yes, as long as they’re not glass. All glass items are strictly prohibited.
